Assignment 1: UBS Completes Globally With Information Technology
Case Study: UPS competes globally with
information technology
Question 1:
UPS's inputs are package information, customer signature. pickup,
delivery and timecard data, data location, billing and customer clearance
documentation.UPS process is by transmitting data onto the central network.
DIAD is placed by the driver into the UPS truck's vehicle adapter then the
package information is then transmitted to the UPS's network for storage and
processing in the main computers. The information can be accessed worldwide as
a proof of delivery of the package to the customers.
Question 2:
The technologies that they used are Delivery Information
Acquisition Device (DIAD) and bar code scanning are the technology used to keep
track of the shipment of the packages. UPS also used Order Management System
(OMS) to manages global service orders and inventory for critical part
fulfilment. UPS’s business strategy is to provide excellence service with lower
cost and technology provide efficiency in their service with lower cost.
Question 3:
UPS business strategy is to provide the best service through lower
price offered and time efficient. By using the technologies mentioned, it is
guaranteed that the business strategy will be achieved through best
service. UPS always improve their service used latest technology like
Order Management System (OMS) to provide customer demand.
Question 4:
If UPS is not using technologies in the business, UPS cannot
provide service to deliver more than 1.5 million package and document each day.
They totally used technology from beginning service until customer received
their package. With technology, the customers can track the delivery process of the packages.
Without the usage of the technology, it would be difficult and harder for UPS
to track the packages and it would be hard for UPS to be a price leader company
and to be trusted and to have customers' loyalty.
